Obituary of John Smith

SMITH, John Lt. Col. (Retired) It is with heavy hearts that John’s family announce his passing on Sunday, July 3, 2016 at the North Bay Regional Health Centre. He was in his 89th year. Will be sadly missed by his wife of 67 years, Letitia (nee Lenfesty), children Linda (Roger), Ron (Louise), Ken (Holly) and Barbara (Gary), grandchildren Cindy, Caroline, Keegan, Trevor, Nicolas, Julie and Martin, great-granddaughter Adley and siblings Margaret Robinson and David Smith (Shirley). John was predeceased by two grandsons Robert Smith and Michael Desmarais and siblings Art, Pat, Stan and Richard (Dick). John worked in the pulp and paper industry as Industrial Relations Manager at Johns Manville, Safety Manager at EB Eddy, and safety counsellor for the Ontario Pulp and Paper Safety Association. John was also a life long member of the Algonquin Regiment working his way through the ranks to Lt. Col. and served as their Commanding Officer. He continued to be involved in the Regiment and Air Cadets mentoring many young people along the way. He leaves many friends and colleagues at the 406 Wing and Branch 23 Legion. John loved spending time at the family cottage on Hemlock Island, Trout Lake where many happy memories were made. The family will receive friends at the Martyn Funeral Home on Wednesday, July 6, 2016 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. A memorial service will be held in the funeral home chapel Thursday, July 7, 2016 at 11:00 am. If desired, donations to the Northern Cancer Research or North Bay Regional Health Centre would be gratefully acknowledged as expressions of sympathy.
