I first started working for Peter Sirrs in 1987 at the Ottawa East Probation and Parole Office having taken a break from my career in 1984 (Pembroke) when my military husband was posted to Shilo, Manitoba, followed by Toronto Staff College. Despite my three year absence Peter advocated for me so that I did not have to study for and endure the three "barrier" exams again (as we referred to them in the 80's) which ensured that I was again compensated as a level two Probation and Parole Officer. He did this again in1991 after another two year absence when my husband was posted to Canadian Forces Base Lahr, Germany.
Peter will be remembered by all staff at the Ottawa East Office for his morning walk abouts the office, individually greeting the support staff and each Probation and Parole Officer. While at the time some of us wondered if he was actually "checking in" on us, years later, having worked for a number of managers who were preoccupied with the demands of the Regional Office, I realized it was his way of maintaining a connection with all of his staff.
While Peter could be a demanding task master to work for, he was always fair and never had favourites. Furthermore, he was never one to "judge" one's work habits or character, providing that individual staff members owned up to mistakes and did not try to make excuses for an oversight in one's work, he accepted the explanation without penalty. Furthermore, although the monthly staff meetings in the early years could result in a few inappropriate expletives directed at Peter from some frustrated Probation and Parole Officers, Peter never took it personally but rather tried to resolve the issue in a calm, diplomatic manner.
On another occasion, Peter put his advocacy skills to work again with senior management when he hired an administrative assistant who had been verbally and emotionally abused at the local detention centre by her manager. Her complaints largly had been ignored until Peter stepped in to ensure a fair outcome. Needless to say she turned out to be an excellent administrative assistant at the Ottawa East Probation and Parole Office who was well respected and liked by all staff.
Peter had a sense of humour and recognized that a hard day of work at the office needed to rewarded by fun times as well. Perhaps his previous years with the Royal Canadian Air Force contributed to his belief in encouraging an "esprit de corps" among his staff. He promoted and participated in staff functions both at the office and outside of the office.
I have been retired from the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services for over three years. During the years I served under Peter he had a significant impact on how I conducted myself professionally during my career.
My condolences to Peter's family. Peter, you were taken too early. Rest in Peace.

To all the children and family members, my sincere sympathies in the loss of Peter. Although we never met, Peter had a significant impact in my life. As a young 22 year old university graduate, I commenced doing volunteer work with Probation Officers in Cornwall. Peter was always so helpful. Circumstances led to a contract offer and then I was successful with a permanent position as a Probation and Parole Officer. Peter remained very supportive and was a great mentor for me. Peter moved away, but I would hear stories of him via colleagues. His pride and joy remained his children. When Peter occasionally returned to Corrections after he retired, I was now working as the Area Manager for Probation Services in Cornwall ( the same position he held) and he saw my name on a document and called me. We had a wonderful chat and caught up on all of our news. I had the opportunity to thank him for taking a chance on me years earlier and he shared that he was so pleased of my accomplishments and proud of me. I was very touched by our conversation.
I have recently retired after almost thirty five years of employment with the Ontario Public Service. I have been very blessed and remain grateful for a very rewarding career. It all started with Peter Sirrs offering me that opportunity.
I wished to share my story with all of you and his family values and his words of wisdom remained with me.
Thank you so much Peter and Rest In Peace.
