Dear Gisele, Jean and I want to express our condolences to all your family members with the passing of the patriarch of your family. Especially to your mother. It was probably a blessing that you moved back to Mattawa and were able to past the last year or more with your father. You know that father's have a special bond with their daughters and that is based on my close relationship with our daughter Tanya. I am sure your father was no different and he must have been comforted by your presence as he suffered the end of his journey on earth. I hope that his passing was unrelated to suffering and that he was peaceful in the end. You know that your father and I had somewhat of an interesting relationship based on a combination of factors. I am going to tell you of a few events that you may have been told of and if not, I hope my revelations are taken with a smile and an understanding of your father as I remember him. Although as a very young child I attended your parents wedding with my parents. I have some vivid memories of Rheal's wedding held in the Huard home in Boom Creek but not of your parents wedding. I do remember your Mom and Dad moving to Minnow Lake in Sudbury and baby-sitting yours truly. I know there was young rug rats but I don't remember who or how old. Your Mom would remember baby-sitting me and I made a fuss to be driven back home very late at night. I had this fear of sleeping away from home. Your father was already in bed and he got up, dressed and with a great deal of patience drove me home. Not a word was said but I now can imagine just how much he must have been disturbed to say the least. My Grandmother passed away and the funeral was huge because of the large family and all living in the Sudbury area. The funeral mass was held in the French church in Minnow Lake. La Paroise La Toussaint. Your father and Roger Breault went up to the choir loft and sang the mass with the most heart warming voices that impress me so much as a 15 year old teenager, and that impression remains with me today. Your father came to Sudbury to work and was a lead carpenter on the multi million dollar McCasick home overlooking Lake Ramsay. He and I shared a bedroom for over a year. It gave us opportune time to discuss, to tease and laugh about the world as it turned then. He would often remark, "Why do we have to sleep, it is a waste of time". Never dared ask why he thought that way. Often after supper we would climb into the back of his truck and he would sharpen his saws for the next days work. Hard to believe that most work was done by hand and not the hand held battery operated tools of today. It meant that carpenters worked long and hard tiring days. He never failed to take the road back to Mattawa on Friday evening returning Monday morning. Every once and while he would ask me to accompany him to Mattawa for the weekend. It would allow me to get together with Richard and enjoy the machinations that we were bound to do on Boom Creek or the Mattawa River. There was always an old row boat or canoe to keep us busy. I remember these trips for another aside that I never mentioned to my parents, (ever). As we would reach the famous stretch between Sturgeon Falls and North Bay, your father would tell me to slide over and I would take over the wheel. Sometime as we drove along he would press on the gas and I would pass a car with a driver and passengers looking in terror as this fourteen year old was driving this vehicle in the passing lane. Your father would find this rather humorous. He would laugh with a strange giggle to see the terror in the eyes of these petrified travelers. I must admit that at times I was in a state of frozen terror as the steering wheel seemed to be a very big wheel in my novice hands. In later years, when I arrived with my new wife Jean who was from the Saguenay or is it Lac St Jean. Jean insists that she is from the Saguenay. Whatever, it allowed your father to discuss about his home town and reminisce with Jean about happenings and historical events from the region that they both new so well. Your father would often talk about working on the building of the Shipshaw Dam in Arvida and once finished he moved on to Mattawa to work on the building of the Dam on the Ottawa River at Mattawa. The rest is history, I guess. Your father was a great friend, a good provider and a father to be proud of. He loved his family and worked hard in good and not so good times. I will forever remember him. May he rest in peace. Roy and Jean Berlinquette
