Obituary of Bruce Martin
Martin, Bruce (Alan)
Bruce passed away peacefully at the North Bay Regional Health Centre on Sunday May 3rd after a courageous battle with cancer. He was just shy of his 86th birthday and will be greatly missed by his daughter Mary Beth Hurley and her husband Keith. He was a loving and devoted grandfather “Pa” to Alexander, David and Jaclyn and was seen cheering on his grandkids and high fiving parents and teammates at hockey arenas and baseball fields. Predeceased by his wife Margaret “Bunny”, his parents Donald and Clara, and his sisters Shirley Blackwell and Donna Morris. Brother to Gerald (Margueritte) and beloved Uncle Brucie to many nieces and nephews. Bruce worked on the CN railway throughout Ontario before attending teacher’s college in North Bay. He spent most of his teaching career as a Vice-Principal, teacher and coach at EW Norman Public School. He moved to Centenniel Public School shortly before retiring in 1988. In his early years, he volunteered countless hours with the Laurentian Ski Club assisting in the development of Mount Antoine and spent summers on Trout Lake at Martin’s Island boating and water skiing with family and friends. After retirement, Bruce curled at the Granite Club, but spent most of his time golfing in Florida, North Carolina or at several area golf courses. He was an Osprey golf course member, founder of Bruce’s Geriatric Golf Tournament held in Mattawa, member of the Odd Balls golf group at Pinewood, and remembered for his hole in one at Clear Springs Golf Course that won him a car in 2000. Bruce lived his life to the fullest and loved spending time reading books or tinkering with projects in his shop. Special thank you to Dr. Carter and Dr. Jinnah and the staff at the Near North Medical Clinic as well as the caring staff in A1, D3 and Emergency at the North Bay Regional Health Centre. Visitation will be held in the MARTYN FUNERAL HOME on Wednesday, May 6th from 2-4:00 and 7-9:00 PM. Service will be held on Thursday May 7th at Martyn Funeral Home at 11:00 am. Cremation with interment in the North Bay Union Cemetery will follow after the service. If desired, donations to the North Bay Regional Health Centre Foundation will be gratefully acknowledged as expressions of sympathy. Online condolences may be offered at www.martynfh.com.
