In April 1983, I was transferred from the renfrew detachment of the opp to virginiatown. I was soon to met justice of the peace David Mann. I was only 25 years of age at the time but what unfolded for me was a wonderful friendship with a man 40 years my senior. It was known by most officers that Dave had been a pow following the dieppe raid. I was told we were to never speak of it. Well I did not listen and will forever be grateful that mr. Mann was willing to share his story. I was willing to listen. Every Remembrance Day since that time I thank god for the men and woman of our armed forces who have sacrificed. I was saddened to read that mr. Mann had passed but so thankful that I was given the opportunity to have met him.

On our way to the V-Town reunion, we called Dave from Mattawa to see if he could meet us for lunch in North Bay. He met us at his place on Vimy decked out in his khaki shorts with suspenders, broad rimmed hat and cane and we followed him to his favourite burger place. He relayed the story about his mechanic knowing what he needed whenever he brought his car into the shop...a side-view mirror. We had a good laugh and a good lunch and got caught up on news of the family. Dave & Jean have been an inspiration and support for our family and we have appreciated their presence in touching our lives.
