My favourite memory of Uncle Tom was a backroad tour I went on with Aunt Dorrie and him many decades ago. We were travelling from Woodstock to Stratford to go to an antique show. As our family did "A to B" travelling I was amazed by how Uncle Tom and Aunt Dorrie made an adventure of the trip - this was foreign to me! He would pull the car over and stop to follow a bird that Aunt Dorrie had spotted, to check out a little antique (he called it an antiquie) shop, or to turn down an interesting looking lane. When we reached our final destination we wandered around the huge auditorium of antique vendors. Aunt Dorrie spotted a ring she really loved but was it too expensive. At some point we split up - I went with Dorrie; Tom wanted to wander around on his own. Aunt Dorrie couldn't get her mind off that ring and before we left she finally decided she may splurge on it after all. She and I found the vendor where it had been but it was gone. She was very disappointed. We met up with Uncle Tom and got bagged lunches to have a picnic in the swan park. When Aunt Dorrie opened her lunch, there resting on top of her sandwich, was the ring!! Neither of us had any idea how or when Uncle Tom had snuck around and bought it for her; he wasn't even with us when she spotted it. I think it was some kind of crazy magic spun from their love for each other. He was such a rascal and we all enjoyed his surprise! I will always remember that day and the twinkle in Uncle Tom's eye.

In 2006, mom (Evelyn) came up with the idea of an annual reunion at Thanksgiving. The chosen location for this auspicious event was the cottage of our dear family friend Joan Martin at Lake Waseosa (near Huntsville). We came from Nanaimo, Michigan, Woodstock, Ottawa, Montreal and Uncle Tom and Joan drove down from North Bay. We spent the weekends enjoying the spectacular fall leaves, boat tours, a traditional turkey feast and of course lots of stories from Uncle Tom. My favourite memories were the discussions between he and mom about whether Peterson or Audubon produced the superior bird reference guide, a debate which was never settled as neither of them was ever wrong!

I have fond memories of Tom over the last several years, as he and my Mom spent some companionable time together. I have lived so far from Mom for so many years, and I always knew that Tom was there to keep her company. His dry sense of humour and his quick remarks were always at the ready, as was a story or two of "how things used to be". Sometimes I had to think twice or 3 times, before I "got it" so to speak, but that was part of Tom's charm. On my family's visits home, he was always close by with a piece of advice, a drink to pour or a story, not to mention some lovely food and and wine on many occasions!! I am very glad to have known him and he will be missed!

Uncle Tom was like a father to me. He will always be my favourite story teller, road travel guide and bird expert. He will forever be missed.
