Obituary of Alice Marie McLaren
Peacefully at Nipissing Manor on Thursday April 26, 2012 after a lengthy and dignified struggle with many health issues. Born at Rutherglen in 1933 to Elmo and Marie Smith, Alice married Kenneth McLaren Sr. in 1949. She would go on to raise her own family while assisting her mother with her youngest brothers and sisters after the accidental death of Elmo in 1950. A few years later, Alice welcomed step-father Helge Tranborg to the family, as a loving companion to her mother Marie. Alice is survived by her husband Ken, and was the dear mother of Sherin Gagne (Ben), Ken McLaren Jr. (Clara), and Randall McLaren (Cindy) all of Rutherglen. Sadly missed and remembered by grandchildren Derek and Melanie Gagne, Robert and Roger McLaren, and Travis MacLennan. Alice will also be missed by her great, and great-great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Alice was the loved sister of Roy Smith (Marian) of North Bay, Barb Holmberg of Cranbrook, BC., Laura Leslie (Vern) of Barrhead, Alberta, Marvin Smith (Ruth) of Red Deer, Alberta, and Dan Smith (Doreen) of Hanley, Saskatchewan. Alice lived an active life as a farmer’s wife. She enjoyed baking and eating homemade breads and pies. She enjoyed country music, good food and time with her family. All three combined made for a perfect day. Pink was a colour to be worn regularly. A trip to the store or across the country was welcomed at all times. Ken and Alice made the trip west to Alberta to visit family often. Alice enjoyed the company of those around her, and was thankful for the lifelong friendships she had. Dolly Parton’s song ‘Coat of Many Colors’ held special meaning to her. It would please her if you remembered her when you hear it. The family will receive friends at the Martyn Funeral Home on Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm and on Tuesday from 1-2 pm. The Funeral service will follow in the chapel at 2 pm. The interment will take place at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Rutherglen. If desired donations to the charity of your choice would be appreciated as expressions of sympathy.
