As Pipe Major of Branch 23 Pipes & Drums I offer my condolences to John''s family. He was a committed piper and band organizor during his tenure with the band. During the numerous trips in Ontario and overseas, we all reaped the benefit of John''s hard work and friendship. He was greatly liked and will not be forgotten.

Lynn, Betty, and all of John''s extended family I was deeply saddened to learn of John''s passing, and extend my sincere sympathy to all of you at this untimely event. Though we have not been in touch for very many years, I knew John well as a friend and close neighbour. We learned the pipes at the same time with the Chapleau Legion Band, and many childhood memories come flooding back. He was a kind and compassionate person, and I particularly remember he saved our dog''s life by rescuing it after it fell through the ice on the Chapleau River, and carrying it home in his arms in early winter - we were children then, and John likely risked his own life to save our dog. He was a good person and I''m sure he will be deeply missed by family, friends, and co-workers of today. Rest peacefully my friend... Ron

We knew John mainly through The Legion Pipes and Drum Band. While I was Pipe Major, John was a great help and supporter. His organizational skills and dry humour were always well received. I will be forever grateful to John for his assistance and backing. Our condolences to Donna and his family.

I began my teaching career at Chapleau High School in the fall of 1961. John was in grade 10. He was a cheerful, outgoing lad --one who was clearly destined for a happy, rewarding life. He was smart too. As the years passed, I lost track of John but I never forgot the kid with the broad forehead and even broader grin. And he played the pipes! I am very saddened to learn of his untimely passing and my condolences go to his sisters, Lynn and Betty, and to his children and granchildren whom I never had the good fortune to meet.

We were co-workers at summer jobs in high school, fellow cadets in the RCAC, spending a summer in the dust bowl of Camp Borden under canvas, polishing shoes and learning to tear down internal combustion engines, and drive troop transport. He was a good friend. He was able to keep his own counsel in times of tragedy. His inner strength was uncommon in a lad so young. It is hard to believe he is gone. In retrospect, he had the potential to be just about anything he could have dreamed of. In those days we all thought it was urgent to get out and earn our own keep. His musical talent, raw energy on any project, and sunny disposition made him a first choice for any squad. My condolences to Lynn, and the two generations of people whose names I found in his obituary. I am happy he meant so much to so many. John was a great guy, and I am saddened to learn he has passed away.

He spoke of his family fondly, especially his children. He will be well remembered as his memory echos the halls of the college.
