Charlie, My thoughts and prayers are with you all at this time. Joan was ever present whenever her girls were paddling and she cheered the loudest and finished by saying "this is your mother speaking". A very fond memory of mine is Joan singing O Canada, unaccompanied, to open the Ontario Championships on beautiful Trout Lake and all was still. She was great support for the family and for the sport of canoeing. She will be missed. Judy

Dear Olmsteds My heart is heavy with my fond memories. I was a piano student, but as it turned out, more a student of life, of what values and attitude makes your own life better, and those around you. Joan lead and inspired with her big heart, and big laugh. Everything was done with enthusiasm, and loudly, as it should! She cared so deeply, and she meant so well, and so we all trusted and learned so deeply. She was a teacher far beyond piano ultimately to me and so many others. The evidence of the impact is clear in her children''s achievements. My deepest sympathies to all. There can be no substitute or replacement for your wife and mother. A great loss for everyone she touched. Nicholas

Charlie and family, I was so sorry to hear of the loss of your beloved mother and wife. I have many wonderful memories of her. For 15 years I shared stories, recipies, pictures, and many laughs with your mom. She was so proud of all of her children and grandchildren. (and how she loved her dog!!) I feel like I know all of you although we have never met. She was truly an amazing person who always brought a smile to my face, and I was blessed to have known her. May time and happy memories bring you comfort and peace.

Joan The Uneven Avenue Family was very lucky to have you as a stellar member. You were always the first with a laugh and the life of the party; a costumed comedienne at countless parties with masterful timing and a shining singing voice. Trout Lake will miss you, and you stood your ground, Joan, and did what you said you would do; that is, NEVER leave your beloved lake until the very end. All those years you and your family visited us at Christmas Eve...decades worth! The Vassbotn piano would hammer out Christmas carols under the deft touch of your musical hands, while the words to "Jerusalem...!" rang out in our rec room downstairs---a rite of passage for young and old alike, year after year after year. We will treasure those songs and those moments. Those notes and keys and chords will live on in the hands of all those students you taught, Joan. So good luck to all the Olmsteds from all the Vassbotns during this difficult time, and I will see you in the summer. Chris Vassbotn Doha, Qatar

Dear Charlie and Family, Phyllis and I are so sorry to hear of your loss. I have been telling Phyllis about what an amazing person Joan was. Such spirit, love and energy. A proud Canadian, the best cheerleader, an awesome cook (so Mary tells me) and an original member of the Uneven Avenue Family. I remember when I was a young boy delivering the Globe and Mail to your house. Joan always wanted to chat, to hear about ''my'' life. She was so sincere and fun... what a great person. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all,

Olmsted family - so sorry to hear of the the news of the loss of Joan. The piano lessons and theory lessons she gave me, music exams and numerous festivals and recitals that she had me participate in where a huge part of my life - and she was always such a postive inspriation! She taught me the impact that a GREAT teacher can have on a life. Nothing was ever too much work or trouble for her to fit into her busy schedule. She even came to the church to see us get married!!! and that was 24 years ago!! Mrs. Olmsted set the standard that I set out to find when looking for a music teacher for our children. Unfortunately I won''t be in North Bay this weekend.... but I will be thinking of you......

To Charlie and family One of the best memories of living on Anita Ave. was knowing Joan Olmsted (Mrs.Olmsted to us). Her piano lessons nearly 50 years ago, although brief, instilled in me a love of music for which I am grateful and babysitting Peter and Barbara were just a few of the highlights. What I will remember also was her constant smile, her love of dogs and her incredible kindness. She cooked an entire roast beef dinner for us, enough to feed our large family when our Dad died. I am very saddened by her passing but I will always remember fondly this special lady. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

Mrs. Olmsted...I can still remember the days when you would look at me during my piano lesson and say ''Shannon...you didn''t practice this week did you?'' I never knew how you could tell… but it made me practice a lot harder! I also remember how you would take me upstairs in your home and let me play on your grand piano – I loved the way that the music you had taught me filled the room. Thank you! A teacher affects eternity: she can never tell where her influence stops. ~Henry Adams~ Sincerely - Shannon

Dear Barb, Nancy, Peter, Paul: As you know your mother played a very vital role in our family on Anita Avenue for over a decade, teaching Cathy, Linda, and Steven piano in her own charismatic and clever style. They were always eager to get to "Mrs. Olmsted''s" for their lesson. And the night before the day of the lesson the piano keys were thumping!! I marvelled at her energy, contageous enthusiasm, gorgeous smile, teaching skills, and wonderful sense of humour. I am doing "grandparenting duties" this weekend, otherwise, I would have jumped in the car to be there to honour your mom. I have thought of her often in the past and will do so again, especially this weekend. Love and Hugs to you all. Marylou (aka, Mrs. Miner).
