Obituary of Berton Haerlen Chapman

CHAPMAN: Berton "Bud" Passed away quietly with his family close by on Wednesday, March 14th, 2018 at Nipissing Manor. He was the son of the late Bertha & Herb Chapman and was born at Nipissing on April 12, 1927. His grandparents had been pioneers in Nipissing among the very first settlers to come to the area from the Ottawa Valley. Born the same year that Lindberg flew the Atlantic Bud had a keen interest in aviation and had been a dedicated employee of TCA and Air Canada for 35 years and spent almost half that time as manager at the Sudbury station. Upon retirement the Chapmans moved to North Bay and spent each summer at the family cottage at Nipissing that he and his family had built on part of the old family farm there. The family had been members of Trinity United Church since retirement. Bud had been a member of the Long Lake Hunt club, a director of the North Bay and Area museum and had worked as a volunteer in the museum for many years. He often took night school courses during the winter. Muriel and Bud traveled extensively and an annual trip to The Pas always yielded a fine catch of lake trout. Each visit to their children enabled them to participate in the interesting lives of their young people. In recent years Bud had joined Nipissing 420 Lodge and The Rorab Shrine Club. Bud was predeceased by his wife and best friend of 60 years, Muriel (nee McGillis). Survived by three children, Paul (Avery) in The Pas, Diane (Dave) in Lively and Bruce (RoseAnne) in Mount Forest, six grand-children, Hayley (Reuel), Shannon (Geoff), Cara, Andrew, Emily, Ashleigh and by his two great grandchildren Lily & Mackenzie. He leaves a sister Thelma Patterson of North Bay and was predeceased by a brother Carl of Chilliwack, B. C. Due to family from out country and Province. Visitation will be held at the Martyn Funeral Home on Sunday May 13th from 2-4 & 7-9:00 P.M. A Memorial Service to celebrate Bud's life will be held at Trinity United Church on Monday May 14th at 1:00 P.M. Interment of ashes will follow in the family plot in the Nipissing Village Cemetery. In lieu of flowers and donations, Bud's family would ask you to reach out to a senior and share an act of kindness.
