Heroux: Romuald George Lucien "Romeo"

Romeo passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 28, 2019 at Southampton Care Centre.  He was the beloved husband of Mary Elizabeth McCulloch (formerly Hansen), in his 94^th year.  Loving father of John Heroux (Maureen Maloney) of Vancouver, Anne Marie Heroux (Doug Bell) of Port Elgin, the late Marie (1950); step-father of Pauline Clark (Bruce) of Toronto, ON, Bonnie Clark (Peter) of Canoe, BC and Doug McCulloch (Marianne) of Barrhead, Alberta.  He will be lovingly remembered by his grandchildren Sonja, Julie, David, Bonnie, Ruth, Mary and Sarah, and his 19 great-grandchildren. Romeo will be sadly missed by his siblings Real, Claude, Marie Jeanne, Agathe, Monique, and his step sister Therese. Predeceased by his beloved wife Norma Cunningham (mother of their children), by his parents, by his brother Florent, his sister Aline, and step brother Gerard.  Romeo was someone who loved a challenge.  You couldn't tell him "it can't be done!"  From early on, he was thrown into many tasks as his father would take on any and every job opportunity that came along.  For example portaging with his step brother Gerard in the winter with a team and sleigh to transport items such as bread and pop, and even a coffin.  Fast forward to adulthood.  Romeo worked for Ontario Hydro for 33 years, starting with various hydro electric dams in Northern Ontario with a beginning wage of $1.05/hr.  He later worked at nuclear power plants in Southern Ontario.   With very little education, all in French, he dug up old blueprints from the waste basket and taught himself to read them.  By the end of his career, he had reached assistant superintendent.  Retiring in 1982 he and his wife Mary moved to their beautiful home on the Bruce Peninsula that they had spent 5 years building.  There he taught himself wood-working, making whatever anyone requested, from every kind of furniture to cedar strip canoes.  They also went on multiple mission trips to five different countries where his vast skill set was invaluable.  After 20 years they moved to their last retirement home in Port Elgin to be close to his daughter Anne Marie.  Friends may call at the Martyn & Sloan "Mattawa Chapel" on Sunday, May 5, 2019 from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m.  A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Anne's Roman Catholic Church, Mattawa on Monday, May 6, 2019 at 11:00 a.m.  Interment to follow in the family plot at St. Anne's Cemetery.  If desired, donations to Save the Children Canada will be gratefully acknowledged as expressions of sympathy.   Online condolences at www.martynfh.com

Romeo est décédé paisiblement le dimanche 28 avril 2019 au centre de soins de Southampton. Il était le mari bien-aimé de Mary Elizabeth McCulloch (anciennement Hansen), âgée de 94 ans. Père bien-aimé de John Heroux (Maureen Maloney) de Vancouver, Anne Marie Heroux (Doug Bell) de Port Elgin, feu Marie (1950); beau-père de Pauline Clark (Bruce) de Toronto, ON, Bonnie Clark (Peter) de Canoe, C.-B. et Doug McCulloch (Marianne) de Barrhead, Alberta. Ses petits-enfants, Sonja, Julie, David, Bonnie, Ruth, Mary et Sarah, et ses 19 arrière-petits-enfants, se souviendront de lui avec amour. Roméo manquera beaucoup à ses frères et sœurs Real, Claude, Marie Jeanne, Agathe, Monique et sa demi-soeur Thérèse. Prédécédé par son épouse bien-aimée Norma Cunningham (mère de leurs enfants), par ses parents, par son frère Florent, sa soeur Aline et son demi-frère Gérard. Roméo était quelqu'un qui aimait les défis. Vous ne pouviez pas lui dire "ça ne peut pas être fait!" Dès le début, il s'est vu confier de nombreuses tâches alors que son père assumait toutes les opportunités d'emploi qui se présentaient. Par exemple, en hiver, il fait du portage avec son beau-frère Gérard avec une équipe et un traîneau pour transporter des articles tels que du pain, des boissons gazeuses et même un cercueil. Avance rapide à l'âge adulte. Romeo a travaillé pour Ontario Hydro pendant 33 ans, commençant par divers barrages hydroélectriques dans le nord de l’Ontario avec un salaire de départ de 1,05 $ / heure. Il a ensuite travaillé dans des centrales nucléaires dans le sud de l'Ontario. Très peu instruit, tout en français, il a déterré de vieux plans de la corbeille et s'est appris à les lire. À la fin de sa carrière, il avait rejoint le surintendant adjoint. À la retraite en 1982, son épouse Mary et lui-même ont déménagé dans leur magnifique maison de la Péninsule de Bruce, qu'ils avaient construite pendant 5 ans. Là, il s’apprend à travailler le bois et à fabriquer tout ce qui est demandé, des meubles aux canoës de cèdre. Ils ont également effectué plusieurs voyages de mission dans cinq pays différents où ses vastes compétences étaient inestimables. Après 20 ans, ils ont déménagé dans leur dernière maison de retraite à Port Elgin pour se rapprocher de sa fille Anne Marie. Les amis peuvent se rendre à la chapelle Martyn & Sloan "Mattawa" le Dimanche 5 Mai 2019 de 14h à 16h et de 19h à 21h. Une messe de sépulture chrétienne sera célébrée à l'église catholique romaine St. Anne, à Mattawa, le lundi 6 Mai 2019 à 11h00.
